Iron Man – Action Film inside a Political Story
Iron Man - It was Wednesday of last week when my boyfriend and I watched Iron Man. I thought it was gonna be another “for-boys-only-sort-of action-film”, but I was enticed the moment I saw Robert Downey, Jr. on the screen (super crush: Ally McBeal days). And when I got engaged to the whole eye-opener story…
With regards to the unethical ammunition supply practice, I think it is an eye opener for all nations fighting against terrorism. Of course there has been media exposure about the US supplying destructive weapons both to their US Army, and the enemy camp. Why? When there is war, there is the United States. And when there is US participation, the exchange deals in favor of Uncle Sam is on the roll. Of course, these can be mere speculations to some. But at least now, people in praise of the United States (calling Gloria Arroyo in the house!), gets a bigger picture.
There is also a question there of who really does terrorism. Who terrorizes more, the Talibans or the Americans? Considering the ammunition trade “in bad taste”, which of the two is more cruel?
It makes one rethink if our own local Philippine forces do the same practice. If proven, would you still doubt why even eleven year-old NPA youths posses high power guns? Or why it is just so hard for the government to eradicate the Abu Sayyaf and the other rebels in Mindanao?
But what is most intriguing in the film is the possibility of a real life equivalent of Tony Stark. As the popular idealogy: I think therefore I am, this fictional character can actually exist. Don’t you think?
If one is as powerful and as brilliant as Tony Stark exists in this lifetime, imagine how we could hold world peace in our hands. Of course, given that this persona has leaped into the “good” camp by doing constructive not destructive business.
Iron Man is both an action movie and a political film, at the same time. More than the effects and astounding adventure victory of Iron Man, the film is a substantial representation of what could be happening in the war-torn regions of this earth – like in our very own Mindanao region, perhaps.
