Riding along with the Philippine national flag bandwagon, just to recall - the longest trail of Philippine flag holders was witnessed here in my hometown Cavite, from Imus to Dasmarinas last June 1st. It is known as the First Wagayway Festival.

I was not exactly compelled to blog about it because the event simply brought me heavy traffic when I was on my way to pay my bills at SM Dasmarinas. But I was taken aback by Joey Velasco’s painting “Heal Our Land”. It was just so moving and meaningful to see Christ praying with our Philippine flag on his arms.

Philippine Flg Day: Heal Our Land by Joey Velasco

Joey, when we heard him talk about his paintings last Holy week, said that the highest achievement of a painter is to see his work looking like it’s so real. It looks so close to reality that when you slash it, blood will spill out. Now that’s a bit gross. But nevertheless, his depiction of Jesus Christ praying for our land is an expression of how our Lord Jesus Christ cares for our Mother land.

One priest noted that God would not make the Philippines the first and one of the biggest Catholic nations in Asia if there wasn’t a plan for us. I think the Philippines is meant to shine and rise above its current challenges. With the celebration of the flag day, and the upcoming Independence day celebration on June 12, let us all be one with Christ in praying for healing our land.
